The St Johns County Chamber of Commerce hosted a Candidate Event on July 23, 2024 for residents to meet and talk with candidates for the upcoming August 20 primary. The event included a straw poll for attendees to indicate their preferred candidate.
Two challenger candidates made the unfortunate decision to hand out a letter to some in attendance. The letter was addressed to St Johns County Firefighter, Paramedic and EMT professionals. In the letter (scroll to the bottom to read the letter), they said that the fire union president has been pressuring firefighters to vote for the incumbent Commissioners and stated that the decision of the Firefighters Union to endorse the sitting commissioners was made by Union leadership, not union members.
Today, David Stevens, President of the St Johns County Professional Firefighters Association, released a letter in response to their letter. In his response, he indicated that the vote to endorse the incumbent commissioners was taken by the membership, not the Board, and that the vote was unanimous to endorse the incumbent commissioners. I have also posted his letter at the bottom of this post.
The past 10 months or so have been full of misinformation, and I have tried here to present a balanced perspective to the nasty inferences and out-and-out lies made about our incumbent commissioners.
But David Stevens response to this letter is perfect. There is little I can say except, please read both letters. Both letters are sufficiently clear that only one can be the truth, and my money is on the President of the Union who held the vote to endorse.
Please read these and form your own opinion. This is important.

[…] In an eloquent response, the President of the Firefighters Union stated that the vote was unanimous by the firefighters, not leadership. He stated: “I explained very clearly how our endorsements took place, so you are very aware it was not a board vote.” You can read both letters here. […]
