Sharing what I have learned

Well, that was just plain rude

On Tuesday, June 4, 2024, Commissioner Joseph laughed out loud at Commissioner Dean during a Commissioners meeting.  It was a derisive laugh, not a friendly one.  After Commissioner Dean made a thoughtful comment about at charter school proposal and the history of growth in the County, Commissioner Joseph claimed she was shocked about Dean’s comment because he had approved of 25,000 homes and Commissioner Whitehurst had approved 12,000.

I don’t understand how a publicly elected official can be so rude. In public.  On the dais.

If I were to guess why, I might think it is because Commissioner Joseph is so completely at odds with her colleagues that she feels the only way to get her point across is to be rude.  That is unfortunate.

If that is the case, I can only conclude that she believes that her way is the only way. But that assumes that her way IS the right way.  I’m not sure that’s how it works.

It appears, however, to be her modus operandi.  On May 27, 2024, she posted a video on Facebook.  The first few sentences were beautiful, relevant and heartfelt.  I hoped that she would stop there.  She didn’t.  She used this platform to complain about her censure, that she has been threatened that she could go to jail, and that “it’s time for St Johns County to wake up and get rid of these people that are bought off and these incumbents that are ruining our County.”  Really, on a somber national holiday?

If I remember correctly, it was her use of the dais as a platform to talk about the 2024 election and say that the election brings hope [my inference: of a new Board of Commissioners] that occasioned the censure.

Three people – two candidates and one elected official – are pushing the theory that the County is a mess and only a change in Commissioners – Commissioner Joseph and the two candidates – can “fix” it.

What is so unfortunate is politicians who push a platform that says to anyone who disagrees, “I really don’t care about you or what you think.”

Is that who we want running our local government?
